Building Panda.id.au with Backdrop CMS

Panda.id.au screenshot

Yesterday I launched the latest version of Panda.id.au, my personal blog, which I re-built from the ground up using the Backdrop CMS. This is my second Backdrop website to date; the first being my business site: PackWeb.com.au. A lot of work went into this seemingly simple, minimal blog website, so I thought I'd write about how I built it and how I contributed to Backdrop along the way.

Conception

The idea for a new version of Panda.id.au came from a growing dislike of the (then) current site. It had a lot of features that either no longer worked, or were no longer being used (such as...

What's God Like?

Question

I recently had a revelation about what God is like. I can't remember whether I read it somewhere or if it just came to me as I was reading the Bible, but either way I'd like to share it with you. First though, let's refresh our knowledge of algebra!

x = 5
Pretty easy, right? x equals 5. 5 is the same as x.

How about this:
y = x
In this case, y equals x. x is the same as y. If we have no other information, then we only know that they're the same as each other. But if we know what else one of them equals, we'll automatically know what the other one equals too. Assuming the statement above,...

Married Life

Our wedding day

Mirjam and I just celebrated our one-month wedding anniversary!, and so I thought I'd post about what it's like to be married.

If you've read my previous blog posts then you'll know that Mirjam and I have had a long-distance relationship for a while, and that when we got married it was only our fourth time being in the same physical location together. So in that way, married life is awesome! No more time differences (only being able to talk to one another as one of us was either waking up or going to bed), no more laggy video calls and no more having to type to each other online (now we...

Denmark and Future Plans

Mariager Bible College

So I'm back from spending four weeks in Denmark with Mirjam. I went over there for a few reasons:

  1. To see and spend time with my fiancée :)
  2. To help our case in applying for a prospective marriage visa (the more time we spend together the more it shows our commitment to each other)
  3. Mum and Dad went travelling around New Zealand for four weeks so I thought I'd rather be with Mirjam than home alone

We had a great time together, and it's weird to think that it's only our third time spent with each other (firstly in Estonia for four days last year when we first met in person, and secondly in...

In Between

Heart-shaped hands

The title of this article is one that Mirjam came up with when she started writing this, but I realised that it's also the name of a Daniel Kirkley song which is quite appropriate to our situation - two people with their differences, but united by love. I thought that was cool :)

This is a part two of sorts for Mirjam's and my ongoing love story.

Mirjam

People have often asked me all sorts of questions about our relationship. How do you guys cope? Wait, you have dates with him, how? Isn't it hard? It must be hard?! And so many more. And that got me thinking, how do we actually do the in...
